The DAT Tape Subsystem uses 4mm cassettes written in the industry standard DDS 1 and 2 tape format. This assures tape interchange between all the major DAT manufacturers (e.g., WangDAT, HP, Sony, and Archive). Included with the DAT drive is the DDS standard hardware compression chip yielding tape capacities of up to 5 GB per tape. The DAT comes with Network Backup Daemon, which includes Apunix's SCSI device driver for the DAT as well as application software for improving and automating backup and archiving. Also bundled is Apunix's FARtool, an archiving GUI that writes tar-compatible data and extracts at 20-200 times the speed of a regular tar archive.
